First Trimester: Weeks 1-13

A quick guide to what may happen during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Weeks 1-4
  • Pregnancy dating starts from the first day of the last period.
  • Conception often happens around week 3.
  • Implantation may begin around week 4.
  • You may not feel pregnant yet, though a missed period can be an early sign.
Weeks 5-8
  • Pregnancy hormones rise quickly.
  • Fatigue, nausea, breast tenderness, and frequent urination are common.
  • The brain, spinal cord, heart, arms, and legs begin developing.
  • Early facial features, fingers, eyes, and ears start forming.
Weeks 9-13
  • Fingers, toes, eyelids, and fingernails continue developing.
  • Bones begin to harden.
  • The fetus may make small movements, usually too early to feel.
  • Your care team may discuss screening tests or ultrasound timing.
