Shoreline Medical Society – Physician Contract availability

About the role

Shoreline Medical Society is seeking a family physician who wants to practice medicine in an innovative model of care on the Saanich Peninsula. We are looking for someone who is as interested in community as they are in their own practice and who wants to be part of a collegial, collaborative team. This team is part of a larger Saanich Peninsula Primary Care Network with additional resources – RN, pharmacists, MH Clinicians, and Social Workers.

About Shoreline Medical Society

Shoreline Medical Society is a charity, governed by a board of directors. The board is comprised of both members of the community and physician representatives. The board is committed to ensuring the best healthcare for our community, as well as an enriched practice environment for primary care practitioners.

Shoreline Medical currently operates two clinics; one in Sidney and one in Brentwood Bay. It provides the Saanich Peninsula community with a range of primary healthcare and health promotion services, delivered by a team of healthcare professionals. Patients assigned to one of their physicians have wrap-around care with continuity between clinic and hospital care. Shoreline Medical Society is committed to health education for both patients and healthcare professionals to improve healthcare and inspire health promotion.

What sort of physician are we seeking?

You will be a member in good standing of the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons, and be willing to support Shoreline’s community initiatives.

Most of the physicians at Shoreline have hospital privileges and participate in the Doctor of the Day program at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital. They provide care in Acute and Long-term Care, as well as Palliative Care, ER and surgical services. Physicians who participate in the Doctor of the Day program are usually out of clinic for one week every six, with locum coverage being provided during these absences. Others provide service in our Youth Clinic, which is offered on Thursday evenings at our Sidney Clinic. The physician we are seeking is interested in working full-time (3 to 5 days per week, and 4 to 9 hours per day) and assuming responsibility for a minimum panel of 550 patients. Ideally, this balanced panel of patients would be comprised of a number of vulnerable patients waiting to be re-attached after the departure of a physician last year, combined with members of the community on the provincial waitlist.

Shoreline offers support to new physicians, both in-house (Medical Directors, an Operations Director and an HR Manager, along with experienced MOA’s and a knowledgeable Billing Clerk) and through programs offered by the local Division of Family Practice. We have effective and efficient processes, supported by the MEDACCESS electronic medical record system.

Shoreline requires a physician who can begin attaching patients as soon as possible; however, this must be preceded by a minimum two-month locum period, in order to determine fit with the team.

Compensation

Compensation packages are offered to family physicians by BC’s Ministry of Health, through the New to Practice or Longitudinal Family Physician contracts.

An alternative to the fee-for-service model, the Longitudinal Family Physician model compensates family doctors for time, patient encounters, and overall size and complexity of patient panels (https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/health/practitioner-professional-resources/msp/physicians/longitudinal-family-physician-lfp-payment-model)

The New to Practice contract is for individual physicians who do not have an established practice with their own patient panel. It is available to physicians who meet the following criteria:

• The physician is prepared to provide community longitudinal family practice services.

• The physician does not have an established patient panel, and

• The physician is prepared to join a full-service group clinic.

The contract duration is for a maximum of 2 years and provides either party the option to terminate without cause with 6 months’ notice. (https://www.doctorsofbc.ca/managing-your-practice/compensation/contract-offerings/individual-contract-new-practice-family-physicians)

Best practices for Shoreline physicians include a maximum of 6 weeks of holidays during the course of a year.
