About Shoreline’s Youth Clinic:
Shoreline’s Youth Clinic is the only dedicated youth health clinic on the Saanich Peninsula, providing a confidential and safe space for young individuals aged 12 to 24. The clinic’s team consists of Physicians, RNs, Mental Health Counselors, MOA staff and Youth in Action Committee members. We support youth with a variety of health concerns, including mental health, addiction, STI testing, reproductive health, and more.
Position Overview:
The Mental Health Counselor will provide critical mental health support to youth on the Saanich Peninsula. Working alongside Physicians, RNs, and clinic staff, the counselor will deliver direct counseling services for youth, addressing both immediate and long-term mental health needs. The role will involve providing short term or episodic, individual and group counseling, as well as supporting the clinic’s overall goal of offering compassionate, inclusive, and confidential care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Direct Clinical Services: Provide short-term and drop-in counseling for youth aged 12 to 24.
- Counseling Support: Address mental health and addiction concerns in individual and group settings.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with Physicians, RNs, and clinic staff to provide holistic care to patients.
- Documentation: Maintain confidential client records using Shoreline Medical electronic medical records systems.
- Crisis Management: Maintain a calm, professional approach in crisis situations.
- Inclusive Environment: Promote a safe and inclusive space for all youth, with a gender-affirming and culturally sensitive approach.

- Team Player: Ability to collaborate effectively with other clinical staff and volunteers.
- Strong Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Tech-Savvy: Proficiency in using electronic medical records systems.
- Compassionate: Demonstrate empathy and understanding for youth, with a gender-affirming approach.
- Culturally Sensitive: Strong awareness of diversity and cultural sensitivity in healthcare.
- Crisis Handling: Ability to remain composed and professional in high-pressure situations.
- Resource Knowledge: Familiarity with or willingness to learn about local resources available for youth.
Qualifications:
- Education: Master’s degree in Social Work, Clinical Psychology, Child and Youth Care, or a comparable graduate degree (preferred).
- Experience: Minimum 1 year working with youth, including those dealing with mental health and substance use issues.
- Knowledge: Understanding of common mental health challenges, addiction, and treatment models for youth.
- Ethics & Boundaries: Knowledge of human services ethics, particularly regarding confidentiality and professional boundaries.
