Know Before You Go: Clinic or ER? Think Shoreline First.
The Saanich Peninsula Hospital Emergency Department (SPH ER) has let us know that some Shoreline patients are coming to the ER for concerns that are not emergencies (CTAS 4 & 5 – see below for definition). In the month of March, the SPH ER reported that there were 35 Shoreline patients who presented to the ER between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. These are issues we can safely and effectively treat in our clinic.
We Can Treat These Concerns in Our Clinic
These problems are important and deserve care, but they are usually not emergencies and can often be treated more quickly at Shoreline:
Earache
Sore throat
Mild fever or cold/flu symptoms
Urinary tract infection (UTI) symptoms
Minor cuts, including those needing sutures or wounds
Minor sprains or possible small fractures
Back pain
Mild abdominal pain
New rash or possible shingles
Prescription questions or medication refills
Mild headache
What Does CTAS 4 & 5 Mean?
When you go to the Emergency Department, nurses use a system called CTAS (Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale) to decide how urgently someone needs care.
CTAS 1–3 = Life-threatening or very urgent conditions (seen quickly)
CTAS 4 & 5 = Less urgent or non-emergency concerns (longer wait times)
